The dot SE country-specific domain extension was started in 1986 and delegated to Sweden. During the first years after its launch, the registration procedure was quite restrictive, so a very low number of domains were bought. Persons were permitted to acquire solely one domain under .PP.SE (“pp” stands for “private person”). Local presence was necessary, i.e. only Swedish persons, firms and organizations were able to register a .SE domain. In 2003, however, the registration process was loosened significantly and, accordingly, the number of dot SE domains has been mounting each year.
